Ocean Science Centre Mindelo started

After two and a half years of construction, the new GEOMAR research station in Mindelo, Cape Verde, has been completed. Now the preparations for the scientific operation of the Ocean Science Center Mindelo have begun. The project is a cooperation of the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and the National Cape Verdean Fisheries Research Institute INDP.

Iron deficiency restrains marine microbes

GEOMAR scientists discover important process in the nutrient cycles of the tropical North Atlantic - Iron is a critical nutrient in the ocean. Its importance for algae and the nitrogen cycle has already been investigated in detail. Now a new discovery shows that microbes also need iron to process phosphorus. A team of researchers from the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and the University of Southampton, UK has just published results in the international journal Nature Communications showing that iron can limit phosphorus acquisition in the ocean.

POGO-PML AMT Fellowship 2017 - open for applications

POGO is pleased to announce that in partnership with Plymouth Marine Laboratory, it is offering a POGO-PML Visiting Fellowship for training on-board an Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) cruise in 2017. Previously this has proved to be a very successful training programme providing hands-on, sea-going experience to young scientists from developing countries, and the opportunity to be involved in an internationally renowned scientific programme.
