Assistant professor in Physical Oceanography at Old Dominion University

The Department of Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Old Dominion University (http://sci.odu.edu/oceanography/) invites applications for a tenure track position as Assistant or Associate Professor in Physical Oceanography. We seek a broad-minded scholar with an interest in the physical processes in the ocean on times scales of inter-annual to centuries and their role in the Earth System. Preference will be given to scientists who employ quantitative analytical methods and/or models and focus their research on societally relevant issues, such as global and climate change, the role of the ocean in the global water cycle, and development of predictive capabilities on decadal time scales.

This position within the Cooperative Institute funded by NOAA conducts research on the linkages between climate change and the Northern California Current Large Marine Ecosystem and addresses what tools are best for prediction of future impacts in order to advise NOAA in the area of Integrated Ecosystem Assessments, possible effects on key species, (e.g., ESA listed or harvested) and how physical forcing may propagate in the marine food chain.

Area of expertise is flexible, but applicants with a research emphasis related to material science, atmospheric science, environmental science, geochemistry or marine biology are especially encouraged. The successful applicants will be expected to establish an externally funded research program supporting an anticipated Chemistry MS program.   Opportunities also exist for collaboration with faculty in our rapidly growing engineering programs, and/or be part of interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs in Coastal and Marine System Science and/or Marine Biology. The candidates will be expected to teach at the graduate and undergraduate level. Requirements include a Ph.D. at the time of hire in Chemistry, Biochemistry or a closely related field. Post-doctoral experience is preferred.
