Postdoctoral position in the research unit “Biological Oceanography” of the research division “Marine Biogeochemistry” - GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel

The GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is one of the leading institutes in marine research in Germany. With 850 employees and a yearly budget of 70 Mio € its major goal is fundamental and applied research in all areas of marine sciences. The GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is offering a Postdoctoral position in the research unit “Biological Oceanography” of the research division “Marine Biogeochemistry”.

Job Description / Duties
Performing innovative research at the interface of plankton ecology and pelagic biogeochemistry through a combination of approaches ranging from laboratory and mesocosm experiments, field surveys in biogeochemical hotspot areas, and numerical simulations of relevant biogeochemical processes. Acquiring and analysing comprehensive data sets from KOSMOS mesocosm studies and further testing of hypotheses gained from these data sets aiming to achieve a process-based understanding of the biological responses to ocean change (warming, acidification, deoxygenation) and their impacts on biogeochemical cycling.

Qualification
We expect applications from outstanding young investigators with a PhD in biological oceanography or related fields and publications in high-ranking peer-reviewed journals. Practical experience in mass spectrometry, flow cytometry, electron microscopy, analytics of inorganic nutrients and carbonate chemistry, HPLC pigment analysis, PAM fluorometry, biogeochemical modelling and the operation of off-shore mesocosms is preferable. The willingness to participate in field campaigns with durations of several months is expected. This is a full-time position position according to 100% of a full-time equivalent.
