Postdoc position in Benthic Ecology, GEOMAR, Germany

Deadline: 10.09.2017

The GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is offering a Postdoc position in "Invasion ecology of the red alga Gracilaria vermiculophylla" .  This post, which starts on 1 October 2017, is in the “Benthic Ecology” research unit of the “Marine Ecology” research division.

Job Description / Duties
A main feature of Global Change is the shifting of distributional ranges including the establishment of new species in an ecosystem. Certain species, such as the East Asian red alga Gracilaria vermiculophylla, seem to be particularly successful invaders. This species originates from China and Japan but has spread along European and North American coasts during the last decades. During its invasion history this species has acquired multiple resistances to stress and has become more tolerant to herbivory and fouling than its native populations. In parallel, evidence is emerging that also its associated microorganisms have adapted to the new environment. The goal of this project is to improve our genetic, physiological, biological and ecological understanding of the impressive invasion success of G. vermiculophylla. This is a collaborative project with the Ocean University in Qingdao, China.
