Application Laboratory (APL) of Research Institute for Value-Added-Information Generation (VAiG) at the Japan Agency for Marine–Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) is accepting applications for a permanent position as a Principal Scientist or Principal Technical Scientist.

[Research description]
APL aims to deepen understanding of the mechanisms underlying oceanic/atmospheric variations at the global/regional scale, and to extend knowledge of predictable phenomena. In addition, we are engaged in fundamental technological development to facilitate predictability studies via unique prediction information systems pertaining to oceanic/atmospheric variations. The overarching research goal of APL is to enhance prediction information systems, including through international collaborations. Against this background, we are recruiting a Principal Scientist or Principal Research Scientist to conduct research and development on ocean/atmosphere prediction systems, and to develop technology allowing actual application of the system. The successful applicant will also engage in related activities at the international level.

[Research specifications]
・The successful applicant will lead research and development on ocean/atmosphere predictability studies at JAMSTEC, mainly via modeling work, and will also contribute to the development and application of a prediction information system. The applicant will publish the findings of these research activities in peer-reviewed journals.
・The successful applicant will contribute to the technological development of environmental prediction systems using high-performance computing to realize value-added information.
・The successful applicant will advance prediction research by synthesizing different model products and a variety of remote and in situ observation data.
・The successful applicant will contribute to the creation of optimized environmental observation systems by engaging in relevant collaborations with other researchers working within JAMSTEC and elsewhere.
・The successful applicant should be proactive in promoting domestic and international collaborations related to environmental modeling, and in proposing cross-cutting research development strategies, while also taking full advantage of the resources, including next-generation human resources, at JAMSTEC.
