Job opportunity: Postdoctoral position in plankton ecology/pelagic biogeochemistry at GEOMAR, Germany

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is offering a Postdoctoral position in plankton ecology/pelagic biogeochemistry in the research unit “Biological Oceanography” of the research division “Marine Biogeochemistry”, starting on January 1st 2019.

Apply by 24 June 2018

Job Description
Performing innovative research at the interface of plankton ecology and ichthyoplankton biology through a combination of experimental approaches (in-situ and land-based) with the aim to achieve a better understanding of the trophic interactions and transfer efficiency from primary producers up to small pelagic fish. Participatin in long-term in-situ mesocosm studies including taking charge of data quality assurance, data exchange and data publication. Establishing national and international collaborations and aiming to acquire third party funding. Advising PhD and Master Students, contributing to GEOMAR’s Master’s programme in Biological Oceanography and communicating research results to the media and the general public.

Qualification
The successful applicant has experience in research on planktonic food webs and ichthyoplankton biology, in particular on trophic interactions of primary producers up to small pelagic fish in mesocosm approaches. Expertise in experimental research on natural plankton communities including ichthyoplankton and in rearing, releasing, sampling and examining fish larvae is expected. Hands-on technical experience in the determination of larval survival, growth and health condition (e.g. through otholith-analysis, biochemical indicators, fatty acid contents) is desirable. A good publication record is essential. The willingness to participate in multidisciplinary teams in field campaigns with durations of several months is expected. The position will be integrated in on-going and upcoming research projects, including the ERC project Ocean Artificial Upwelling (Ocean artUp) and the BMBF coordinated project Coastal Upwelling System in a Changing Ocean (CUSCO).
