Job Opportunity: PhD Position in Dynamics of the Ocean Floor, GEOMAR, Germany

Deadline: 15th January 2019

The research unit “Marine Geodynamics” of the research division “ Dynamics of the Ocean Floor” at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is offering a funded PhD Position. The position offers the possibility to attain a doctoral degree in natural sciences.

Job Description / Project Description
Submarine landslides, i. e. the downslope movement of slope material, include the largest mass movements on Earth and can generate damaging tsunamis. By far the largest events have occurred along gently inclined continental slopes, but the reason(s) for large-scale failure of low-angle submarine slopes are contentious due to a lack of direct observations and in situ monitoring. In close collaboration with the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering and Construction Management of the Technical University Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH) the DFG funded project “Investigation of gas migration as a TRIggering mechanism for Submarine landslides on COntinental slopes” (TRISCO) aims to investigate if free gas in marine sediments may trigger seafloor failure.

The doctoral candidate will explore 3D seismic reflection and Ocean Bottom Seismometer data from two submarine landslides to map submarine landslides and gas distribution, identify preferred migration pathways, and estimate the quantity of free gas in the sub-seafloor. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate, who will work closely with a doctoral candidate based at TUHH to explore the role of gas for the stability of submarine slopes.
