Invitation to participate in a South African research cruise onboard SA Agulhas II under the IIOE-2 programme

In 2014, the IOC of UNESCO adopted a resolution in support of the Second International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE-2), to run from 2015 to 2020. South Africa, being one of the countries affiliated to the IOC will be participating in the IIOE-2 through various activities. These activities were endorsed by the South African Cabinet in August 2017.

To this end, the National Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) invites experts, natural and social scientists, and students to participate in a research cruise onboard the SA Agulhas II in October-
November 2017.

A brief description of the cruise is as follows:
Research ship: SA Agulhas II
Berths available: 100 (single and shared cabins).
Cruise Dates: 15 October 2017 – 15 November 2017 (30 days)
Area of Operation: South West Indian Ocean from Durban, South Africa to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.


The ship will leave from and return to Durban, and conduct scientific sampling off the coasts of Mozambique and Tanzania.

Disciplines (including but not limited to): Physical Oceanography, Chemical Oceanography, Biological Oceanography, Benthic Biodiversity, Marine Top Predators (whales, seabirds), Marine Geology, Social

10th WIOMSA Conference Open Day / Stopover – the SA Agulhas II will have an Open Day in Dar es Salaam on the 3rd and/or 4th November 2017.


South Africa, through the DEA, invites interested scientists and students to apply to participate in the scientific cruise. Those interested in applying, should send an email with their contact details to (Copy to Ms Gcinani Tom email address in order to receive an application form. The closing date is 15 September 2017 (18:00 GMT).



Terms and Conditions
1. The applicants should be able to arrange their travel arrangements to and from South Africa (Durban). Participants who wish to disembark in Dar Es Salaam should indicate in the forms.
Participants are responsible to make their own travel and visa arrangements. Limited funding for transport and logistics is available.
2. Food and accommodation onboard the SA Agulhas II will be provided for the duration of the cruise.
