Eduardo Balguerías

Dr. Eduardo Balguerías is Ph.D. in Marine Biology. He started his professional career in 1979 as collaborator at the University of La Laguna (Canary Islands, Spain) and as scientific observer working for the Canaries Oceanographic Centre of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO).


In 1981, he was contracted as researcher at the IEO for a project dealing with small scale fisheries in the Western Sahara where he established collaborative links with scientists from African institutions, particularly from Morocco (“Institut National de Recherche Halieutique”, INRH), Mauritania (Institut Mauritanien de Recherches Océanographiques et des Pêches, IMROP) and Senegal (Centre de Recherche Océanographique Dakar-Thiaroye).


In 1989, he became senior scientist at the IEO continuing with his research in Africa, the Antarctic and South America being head of the IEO research program in Africa from 1991 to 2008. From 2008 to 2010 he has been Deputy Director of Research at the IEO. Since June 2010 he is the General Director of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography.


He has represented his Institution, Spain and the European Union in scientific meetings of fisheries and oceanographic organizations such as CECAF, CCALMR, ICES, STECF, CIESM, FAO and the Joint Scientific Committees of the EU fishing agreements with third countries. He has acted as chairman or vicechairman in many workshops, working groups and scientific boards of these organizations.


He has participated in around 30 projects and 25 research cruises most of them in collaboration with African and European marine research institutions. He has directed 2 Ph.D. Thesis and 3 Master Thesis and has published hundreds of reports and more than 70 scientific papers in specialized books and peer review journals. He has also acted as referee of projects in public calls of the European Commission and the Spanish Scientific Program of I+D+i as well as for several scientific journals.
