CALL FOR APPLICATION - WASCAL Master Program in Climate Change and Marine Sciences at the University of Cabo Verde

The newly established WASCAL Master's Research Program in Climate Change and Marine Sciences (MRP-CCMS) will be launched in June 2019 and the call for applications is now open.

The deadline for application is 29 March 2019.

 

The Master's Research Program in Climate Change and Marine Sciences is based at UniCV, led by Dr. Corrine Almeida, Director of the Program. The program will cooperate closely with the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, the University of Kiel and the Thünen Institute, as German partner institutions and with the National Institute for Fishery Development (INDP) as the Cabo Verdean partner institution. The program will make use of the newly established Ocean Science Centre Mindelo (www.oscm.cv) and students will benefit from a dynamic research environment and projects running in the region. Dr. Björn Fiedler from GEOMAR, in copy to this message as well, will coordinate this research component of the MRP-CCMS in close consultation with Dr. Corrine Almeida.

 

Kindly note that the graduate program is eligible to citizens of the WASCAL member states only: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo. Other ECOWAS member countries may be admitted without scholarship on an availability basis. Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following fields or any other related fields: Biological Sciences, Oceanography, Geography, Sciences of the Atmosphere. They must have at least an intermediate level in English language.

  • This year's batch is granting twelve (12) students to be on scholarship in each graduate school and eight fee paying students to make up a total of 20 students in each graduate school. The scholarships are extended annually upon successful completion of study program and include a monthly stipend to cover accommodation and living expenses for the period of studies, payment of university fees, and all students will receive financial support to conduct their research.
  • Master’s students will start with a 4 month language update at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana, followed by an 18-month course curriculum at the lead university, Uni-CV. During the course work phase, students will be required to develop a detailed program (proposal, including budget) that will be approved by their graduate program. Students will be allowed 6 months to conduct research and write their thesis.
  • The program offers honorariums for lecturers and we motivate you to think about possible candidates. Directors and Deputy Directors of the WASCAL programs as well as WASCAL staff are not entitled to honorarium for lecturing at their programs.
  • Students will be encouraged to have at least two supervisors. In case they have three supervisors, it is suggested that one of them comes from a German university. The latter shall be involved as early as possible in the supervision process. A honorarium for supervision is also applicable.
