This POGO brochure has been put together to celebrate the Blue
Earth Global Expedition (BEAGLE), organised by the Japan Marine-Earth
Science and Technology Agency (JAMSTEC),
with collaboration and participation by many POGO members. After the
POGO São Paulo
Declaration of 2000, many POGO members responded to the call for
enhanced observations in the Southern Hemisphere. However, the most
important and momentous response came from JAMSTEC, which organised
the Southern Hemisphere circumpolar expedition as part of its 30th
anniversary activities. The expedition had a major capacity-building
element, which was instrumental in training several oceanographers
from Asia, Africa and Latin America. The expedition was also a great
success scientifically, with major scientific results beginning to
emerge from the vast amount of data that was collected during BEAGLE.
This brochure has been prepared as a tribute to the JAMSTEC initiative
that converted POGO policy into action so effectively, and so rapidly.
The brochure was prepared by the News and Information Group of POGO,
under the leadership of Jan Boon from the Royal Netherlands Institute
for Sea Research (NIOZ).
This task could not have been achieved without Jan's inspiration,
dedication and tenacity. The brochure has been printed and distributed
by Royal NIOZ. Prof. Jan de Leeuw of Royal NIOZ is the current
Chair of POGO, and we are indebted to him for his support and encouragement
in this venture.
