Alumni Meetings

A group of selected NF-POGO Scholars and Instructors, and representatives from the Nippon Foundation and POGO Secretariat met in London, from 20 to 22 October 2010, to discuss the initiation of the Network of alumni and plans for a major Alumni Meeting to be held at the Nippon Foundation in Tokyo. Due to the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in March 2011, the Alumni Meeting as originally conceived has been postponed until further notice.

Nonetheless, the London Meeting was very successful in laying the foundations for what was to become the NF-POGO Alumni Network for Oceans (NANO). The structure of the network was drafted and plans were formulated to set up a website and newsletter. Both of these were achieved within the following year (see www.nf-pogo-alumni.org).

A follow-up meeting took place in Abingdon, UK, in September 2011, to prepare proposals for research projects to be undertaken by the alumni. The meeting produced four regional proposals that will be submitted to the Nippon Foundation for potential funding in 2012.

Since then, NANO Coordination Meetings have been held every year to allow the participants to provide updates on their regional research projects, to plan for the continuation of these projects and write proposals for new ones, and to discuss communications and outreach.
