The Center for Oceanographic Research in the eastern South Pacific (COPAS) of the University of Concepción (UDEC), Chile, invites applications for a full-time one-year research position in biogeochemical modeling to participate in ongoing, multi- and inter-disciplinary research on the physics, biogeochemistry, ecology and paleoceanography of the eastern South Pacific. There is the possibility of continuation after one year or it could turn into a permanent faculty position at the Department of Oceanography at UDEC.
The successful candidate will work closely with members of the COPAS Center. A broad range of research interests will be considered that relate to ocean processes in the eastern South Pacific. These include, but are not restricted to, processes in the Oxygen Minimum Zone, coastal and shelf-break upwelling, and processes that influence the production and transport of particulate matter in the ocean/dissolved inorganic nutrients/dissolved organic matter/greenhouse gasses, and the influence of climate disturbances (i.e., ENSO, interdecadal variability) on the biogeochemistry of the ocean. It is also expected that the successful candidate develops strong interactions with members of the departments of Oceanography and Geophysics at UDEC.
Required qualifications:
• Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Oceanography or a closely related
field. Completion of the Ph.D. at the time of application is required.
• Demonstrated knowledge of biogeochemical modeling in coastal and/or
open-ocean environments.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills
• Excellent writing skills and experience in writing scientific articles
The position is open to candidates world-wide. Applicants should submit a letter of application, detailed résumé, statement of research interests, and the names, postal and e-mail addresses of three referees to Chair Biogeochemical Modeler Search Committee, attention Ms. Mabel Torres, FONDAP COPAS Center, University of Concepción, Casilla 160-C, Barrio Universitario, Concepción, Chile; or by e-mail in PDF format to Ms. Mabel Torres (mabtorres@udec.cl).
For full consideration applications must be received by 30 April 2006. The desired start date for this position is 1 September 2006. Annual stipend is in the vicinity of USD$33,000; medical insurance is provided. Applications received after April 30th will only be considered if the position has not been filled.
